passed down seeds
series of silkscreen portraits
atswete seed filtrate, funnel, bottle, plinth
2015
In the screenprint series, passed down seeds, I address the colonial legacy of 19th-century Filipina mestiza portraiture. These images are of hybrid women, with our mix of Spanish and native blood, made icons by European photographers. By making ink from atswete, a Philippine fruit, and filtering it through these portraits, I created a new image of a mestiza, my mestiza: obscured, lingering, and reclaimed by the red ink's stain.
